Queen Eleanor Primary School

Class 2

Welcome back, I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and are now ready for an exciting term ahead.

In English we will be reading Non-fiction texts about the Ancient Egyptians. We will look at the structure and features of non-fiction texts and will be writing factual reports, using dictionaries and creating a collective non-fiction book. We will continue to strength our grammar knowledge throughout these lessons and reinforcing the basics of punctuation.

In Maths we will be looking at Fractions of shapes and amounts, we shall also be solving word problems containing fractions and decimals. We will also be looking at shapes, their properties - including angles and translations. We shall continue to practise learning the times tables and their corresponding division facts. Please could you encourage your children to practise their times tables at home as this will greatly assist their maths skills and levels.

Throughout CLT we are looking at Ancient Egypt,  we will look at the location of Egypt and why the Nile was so important, we will look at pharaohs, pyramids and everyday life. We will study the Egyptian Gods and the process of mummification – not for the faint hearted! In our creative learning time we will develop our art techniques.

In Science we will be looking at Human Impact and how our planet has been affected over the years. This links well to current affairs and the effect that plastics have had on our oceans.

PE will be taught on a Monday afternoon, we shall be practising sports hall athletics, which will come in useful when we compete at the inter school event at Tuxford this term. Swimming will continue until half term and then we have been fortunate to secure a highly qualified gymnastics coach to deliver gymnastics sessions to all the children. These sessions will be on a Wednesday. Please can PE kits be available in school each Monday as we are noticing an alarming number of PE kits being forgotten. All PE kits should be named.

Homework will be set weekly and will relate to the work undertaken in class. As always the reading expectations are in place; children are expected to read at least 3 times per week at home. If a child reads 5 or more times a ticket will be given. Merits are given for 3 reads per week.

Thank you for your continued support.
