Welcome to Class 2, I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer break and are ready for the challenges of Year 3/4.
In English we will be looking at film trailers and how these summarise stories. We will be looking closely at how films are marketed and advertised and will be using visual literacy to make our own trailers. We will continue to incorporate aspects of grammar and punctuation; we will also link comprehension activities to our topics. We will be focusing upon film trailers which are set around winter conditions such as Ice Age and Happy Feet as this also links with the CLT topic – ‘Life in the Freezer.’
In Maths we will focus on place value, this will involve ordering numbers, writing numbers in words and digits, rounding numbers and rapidly recalling number bonds. We will further develop these skills by using them within the contexts of money and measures. We will continue to develop our times tables skills and there will be weekly opportunities to test these skills. As mentioned our CLT topic, Life in the freezer, will see us making ice lollies which links to DT, we will look at continents in particular the Arctic and Antarctic.
In Science, we will be looking at sounds and hearing. We will continue to build upon our science vocabulary throughout each lesson.
PE will be taught on a Wednesday afternoon, we have been fortunate enough to have Hurricane Sports to assist with these sessions, we will also be swimming on a Friday afternoon. Please remember named PE kits on these days and appropriate footwear. The children will be coming home in their PE kits each Wednesday due to time commitments but these need to be back in school for the following session.
Homework, we have made the decision to return to weekly English and Maths homework activities, these will replace topic homework and are in addition to weekly spellings (which shall continue to be on a Friday) Homework will be handed out on each Tuesday and will be expected to be handed in the following Tuesday. Your continued support in this area is much appreciated.
Following the great success of children reading a minimum of 3 times per week at home, we will also continue this. We envisage to hear the children as much as possible within school. The raffle ticket system will continue with a gift token draw at the end of each term. Some children within the class will also have additional support with their reading, if this is your child we will let you know via their reading records, please could you help us by hearing your child read every day as this has proven to be highly successful.
