Welcome to Class 2, the classroom has all changed round and is looking bright and ready for some super work, I’m sure that most of you will have noticed the WWII theme that we have.
In English we will be reading ‘Wave me Goodbye’ by Jaqueline Wilson. This is a book all about evacuation and gives excellent starting points for writing opportunities. We will be strengthening our grammar knowledge throughout these lessons and reinforcing the basics of punctuation.
In Maths we will be working hard to build upon the basics of maths, we will look closely at place value and will use this to complete number sentences using all four operations. We will continue to improve our mental maths, which will have a main focus upon times tables. Please could you encourage your children to practise their times tables at home as this will greatly assist their maths skills and levels. There are many useful websites should your child prefer to learn them this way, these include: http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/timestable/ and http://www.primarygames.co.uk/PG5/Eggs/Multi/eggsmult.swf.
Throughout CLT we are looking at WWII, we shall focus on evacuation, rationing, The Blitz and The Battle of Britain. We will be visiting Eden Camp to experience what life inside a prisoner war camp would have been like. In RE we will continue the WWII theme and will be looking at the Holocaust and Anne Franks – this will of course be age appropriate. As always, if you have any books or materials which may prove useful to the topic, these would be much appreciated.
In Science we will be looking at Plants and their growth, this also links to the WWII campaign of ‘Dig for Victory’ we will be growing vegetables inside and we will hopefully be making meals with the produce.
PE will be taught on a Monday afternoon, we have been fortunate enough to have Hurricane Sports to teach this sessions, we will also be swimming on a Friday afternoon. Please remember PE kits on these days and appropriate footwear.
Some children within the class are having additional support with their reading, if this is your child we will let you know via their reading records, please could you help us by hearing your child read every day as this has proven to be highly successful.
