Class 3

Welcome to an exciting new school year for the new Class 3!  Everyone has settled in brilliantly and returned with a super attitude.

In English we are starting the new term with a multi-genre topic on the theme of space and the first moon landing. Our class novel will be ‘Cosmic’ – about a boy in space.  We will be revising ways to improve our writing. Our work will cover both fiction and non-fiction writing.  We will finish off the term with cartoon-style story about refugees and also work on the ‘Titanic’ Disaster.

Spelling tests will be on Thursdays. Over the week we will have lessons on Reading Comprehension/Guided Reading, a SPAG session, a calculation lesson and X tables and then – on certain  weeks – a Big Write.

In Maths we are beginning the year by investigating place value and attempting to read, write, order, sequence  and round a range of four (and more!!) digit numbers, including decimals. This half term we will also go over the four calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division – including fractions! As we follow a mastery curriculum, the focus is on number fluency, reasoning about number and problem solving.

Our CLT (Creative Learning Time) is a whole school topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ involving work on Space, Space travel, Holst’s ‘The Planets’, Earth’s Geography and much more ……. Art will be incorporated into this subject, as will a whole school DT day on dried foods (perfect for budding astronauts!)

‘ Earth and Space’  will be our focus in Science which will include the planets, gravity, day and night etc.

In RE we are looking at how religion is expressed through the Arts of music, painting, drama and dance and PSHE will focus on TEAM – everyone working together to achieve more.

The second half term will incorporate the whole school topic of ‘What a Disaster!’ about natural disasters, climatic zones and extreme weathers. So in science we will investigate ‘Forces’ and ‘Properties and Changes in Materials’, in PSHE we will cover Global responsibility and charity response and in DT we will make a working volcano!

We will be learning Spanish this year and cannot wait to show off our new language skills to you at home! Our topics will include investigating Spanish speaking countries in Central and South America, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports and the subject of school.

During P.E. – on a Monday for KS2 -  we will begin with Invasion Games.  We will also continue going swimming on a Friday afternoon to Newark which I know the children thoroughly enjoy. There are several sporting activities already arranged throughout the year for Class 3 as part of the Tuxford family  – more details will be published nearer the time.

We will be continuing with our ICT lessons with Mrs Lister, beginning again with the rules for e-safety.

We are all looking forward to an exciting, stimulating and successful year.  We have made a fantastic start – the children have come back in a brilliant frame of mind and are giving 100% effort already!!  We are eager to watch them grow socially, emotionally and academically – whilst having lots of fun!
