Welcome to an exciting new school year for the new Class 3! A special warm welcome to Duncan and Henna who have joined our class this year!! Everyone has settled in brilliantly and returned with a super attitude.
In Literacy we are starting the new term with a multi-genre topic on ‘March of the Penguins’. We will be revising EGPS (English grammar, punctuation and spelling) and Rainbow Grammar/DADWAVERS to improve our writing. Our work will cover both fiction and non-fiction writing. After half term, coinciding with the centenary of the end of WW1, we will do some work based on ‘War Horse’. Spelling tests will be held weekly on a Thursday and Reading Comprehension on a Friday. We continue to expect our children to read at home at least three times a week – and they will receive a raffle ticket for every 5 times they read during the week (up to a total of 5 tickets in any single week!)
In Numeracy we are continuing to focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We will be concentrating initially on number work and therefore we have begun the year by investigating place value and attempting to read, write, order, sequence and round a range of five (and more!!) digit numbers, including decimals. This half term we will also go over the four calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be doing a weekly calculation test and pupils are reminded that they should be continually revising their times tables.
Our CLT (Creative Learning Time) is a whole school topic entitled ‘Life in the Freezer’ involving cross-curricular, beginning with the Continents of the world and focusing on the Arctic and the Antarctic. Art will be incorporated into this subject, as will a KS2 DT day on Ice Lollies. A short topic on the Iron Age and Stone Age will lead us up to Christmas.
We will be learning French this year and cannot wait to show off our new language skills to you at home! Our topics will include finding your way around a French town, asking for directions and buying souvenirs.
In RE we are looking at Religion and the Individual and in PSHE we will be discussing controlling anger and other emotions.
During P.E. – on a Wednesday this year - we will begin with Tag Rugby. Children in KS2 will be going home on Wednesdays in their PE kit which will need to be returned to school before the following PE lesson. We will also continue going swimming on a Friday afternoon to Newark which I know the children thoroughly enjoy. There are several sporting activities already arranged throughout the year for Class 3 as part of the Tuxford family PLT – more details will be published nearer the time.
We will be continuing with our ICT lessons with Mrs Lister, beginning again with the rules for e-safety.
This year, after listening to several comments from parents, we have decided to stop our termly projects and will resume weekly homework. In Class3 English and Maths homework will be set on a Monday to be handed in on the Thursday.
We are all looking forward to an exciting, stimulating and successful year. We have made a fantastic start – the children have come back in a brilliant frame of mind and are giving 100% effort already!! We are eager to watch them grow socially, emotionally and academically – whilst having lots of fun!
