Welcome back, I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and are now ready for an exciting term ahead.
In English we will be reading Gangsta Granny by David Walliams and using this as inspiration for our written work. Throughout the story he includes fiction and non-fiction elements which we will look at in detail. We will continue to strengthen our grammatical knowledge throughout discreet EPGS lessons and use this within our independent writing. We will also continue with reading a class novel, all the children enjoy these sessions and it really seems to be encouraging a true love of reading!
In Maths we will be developing methods of addition and subtraction, these will include column methods and the use of bar models; equipped with these skills we shall solve word problems of increasing difficulty. We shall also be looking at measures in different forms, we will be measuring accurately and using this to calculate perimeters and make conversions. We will also look at the measure of time and will be solving problems involving money. Towards the end of the year, Y4 will be taking a times table test so we will be continuing with weekly times table lessons, the more often the times tables are practised the more embedded they become. Please can parents and carers practise these at home as much as possible.
Throughout CLT we are looking at Invaders and Settlers – Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. We will look at the Geography aspects of the topic and look at what life would have been like in Anglo Saxon times. In our creative learning time we will develop our art techniques by looking at artist who use successfully paint water and will use clay to make Anglo Saxon jewellery.
In Science we will be looking at Humans as animals and how nutrition is vital to life; we will also look at healthy eating and how we can keep healthy.
PE will be taught on a Monday afternoon, we are learning to play lacrosse which the children are very excited about. Swimming will continue until half term and then we have been fortunate to secure a highly qualified gymnastics coach to deliver gymnastics sessions to all the children. These sessions will be on a Wednesday. Please can PE kits be available in school each Monday and all kits should be named.
As always the reading expectations are in place; children are expected to read at least 3 times per week at home. If a child reads 5 or more times a ticket will be given. Merits are given for 3 reads per week. Weekly spellings will be given to practise at home, the meanings of each spelling will be taught in class. In addition times table activities are being set on a weekly basis to try to further develop this vital skill.
Thank you for your continued support.
